Research

In addition to providing excellent medical care, the physicians in the Division of Adolescent Medicine are actively involved in programs aimed at preventing some of the common causes of injury and disease, including risky sexual behavior and violence. Staff members have received special grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for clinical research and community behavioral studies in youth with HIV/AIDS; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for hepatitis education; the Florida Department of Health for STD screening and treatment, HIV testing, and chronic disease care; from Miami-Dade County for the violent injury statistics system; the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Health Foundation of South Florida for firearm injury reduction program; Union Positiva for substance use prevention in Spanish-speaking youth; and the University of South Florida for Florida/Caribbean AIDS Education and Training Center work.

The Division also participates in the Adolescent Trials Network (ATN) for HIV/AIDS Interventions, a collaborative research group at 15 sites in the U.S. that see HIV-infected teenagers and young adults.  Through the ATN, multiple behavioral, epidemiological, and treatment protocols afford HIV-infected youth the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge clinical trials and informational studies.
