Injury-Free Coalition for Kids - Miami

Injuries kill more children every year than all diseases combined. All-too-common sources include shootings, bicycle accidents, playground accidents, car accidents, drownings and leaving infants in hot cars.

The majority of accidents can be prevented. University of Miami Pediatricians have taken a leadership role to help prevent violence and childhood injuries by educating parents and helping them obtain safety items free or at low cost.

For more information on the types of programs offered by the Injury-Free Coalition for Kids at Holtz Children’s Hospital/Jackson Health Systems, and the research being conducted to prevent violence and injuries, please visit The Injury Free Coalition for Kids web site or www.violenceprevention.org.

Injury-prevention programs can now come to your neighborhood, thanks to a big, red bus with “Injury-Free” written on the side. The bus travels around Miami-Dade County four days a week, appearing at such places as health centers, museums, daycare centers and elementary schools. The bus provides free parent education and demonstrations at no cost. The inside of the bus has a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and stairs with hands-on exhibits to help teach how to prevent injuries at home and around water. Professionals also help parents learn how to install a car seat and fit a bike helmet.

Visits by the bus are made possible by The Children’s Trust, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Miami Dade Transit and The Samantha Foundation.
