Batchelor Children's Research Institute

The University of Miami Department of Pediatrics has grown into one of the larger academic departments in the country with impressive teaching/educational programs, extensive clinical care activities and major research efforts. The Pediatrics Department consistently ranks among the top nationally in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding for medical research. The award of NIH grants is a key indicator of research quality and competitiveness.

Recognizing this, the University embarked on the construction of the Batchelor Children's Research Institute, which was formally dedicated May 2001. Initiated with a $10 million gift from the Batchelor Foundation, and one of only a handful of children's research centers in the nation, this Center provides 147,000 sq. ft. of high-tech and basic laboratory space.

In addition to his extraordinary gift of the Batchelor Children’s Research Institute, Mr. Batchelor generously established the Micah Batchelor Award for Excellence in Children’s Health Research.  This $5 million endowment in memory of his cherished grandson, Micah, generates at least $300,000 each year to be awarded to one selected scientist conducting research in children’s disease and working in the Batchelor Children’s Research Institute.  This prestigious award is given annually and continues to inspire our physician-scientists to develop innovative ideas and solutions that will improve the health and well-being of children in Florida and world-wide.
