About the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology
Specialists in the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology diagnose and treat all diseases of the liver, pancreas and bowels in children, as well as problems related to nutrition, such as malabsorption problems and obesity.
The special diagnostic tests they perform include endoscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP, liver biopsy, esophageal motility, pH monitoring, lactose breath test, H pylori breath test and DEXA scans. For children with special dietary requirements, nutritional consultations and home parenteral nutrition and special enteral nutrition are provided through the department.
When children require a liver or intestinal transplant or more routine abdominal surgery, UM pediatric gastroenterologists work closely with UM pediatric surgeons to ensure that patients receive the best possible care. Most surgery is performed at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Some patients are admitted to Baptist Hospital, including those with pancreatitis, severe abdominal pain, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and unexplained weight loss or vomiting.
