Physicians Honored with George E. Batchelor Endowed Chairs in Pediatrics

In hopes of finding life-saving treatments and cures for pediatric illnesses, the Batchelor Foundation recently reaffirmed its commitment to the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics. Foundation representatives presented endowed chairs to renowned faculty members Melvin Almodóvar, M.D., Miguel Saps, M.D., and Judy Schaechter, M.D., M.B.A., during a May 17 ceremony.

Miller School Neonatology Fellow Presents Research at Pediatrics Meeting in Japan

Keyur Donda, M.D., a third-year fellow in the Division of Neonatology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics, was honored with an invitation to present his research at the 121st annual meeting of the Japan Pediatric Society (JPS). Using an animal model, Donda has been investigating brochopulmonary dysplasia, a neonatal lung injury that affects thousands of premature infants each year.

Miller School Faculty Council’s Inaugural Award Program Honors Teaching and Research Excellence

The Faculty Council of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine held its first-ever awards program during its final meeting of the academic year on May 22. The atmosphere was just right for something new, with faculty members chatting amiably beside a well-stocked supper buffet, and live jazz adding a musical dimension to the event.

Sylvester’s Dr. Asha B. Pillai Receives Grant for Innovative Transplant Immunology Research

Asha B. Pillai, M.D., a Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center researcher who specializes in pediatric immunotherapy, has received a $1.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for her innovative work in transplant immunology. Pillai wants to give hope, and perhaps even a cure, to patients with non-cancerous blood disorders like sickle cell anemia and thalassemia.

UHealth’s Specialized Neurosonology Lab Focuses on Cerebrovascular Health

Neurosonology — the ultrasonic imaging of neural structures — allows physicians at UHealth – the University of Miami Health System to get a unique and very detailed look at the health of the arteries inside and outside the brain. This can mean a more precise diagnosis, prognosis and management of people after a stroke, transient ischemic attack and even asymptomatic cerebrovascular disease.

UM Researcher, Transplant Surgeon and Sylvester Trustee among 2018 Health Care Heroes

For nearly 30 years, Mary Bartlett Bunge, Ph.D., worked tirelessly as a neuroscientist with The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Her pioneering work in the area of nervous system regeneration and her decades-long dedication to finding ways to repair spinal cord damage earned Bunge the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce.
