Basic and Translational Research Program in Sickle Cell Disease (BTRP-SCD)

In 2008, The Sickle Cell Disease Center was awarded one of eleven national National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) BTRP-SCD U54 grants (previously known as the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Centers). This grant includes support for a high school summer program, a sickle cell Scholar program, and a core project that will examine a model intervention to improve cognitive function in children and adolescents with sickle cell disease, focusing on reducing stress and pain by improving academic functioning and family functioning. The University of Miami BTRP-SCD will also participate in a number of national clinical trials in SCD, with a primary focus on neurodevelopment of children and adults with cognitive risk or injury due to disease processes.
