They say that whenever an angel gets its wings, a bell rings. The bell that Miami resident Jorge Bustamante heard in his head three years ago may well have been a sign that his beloved daughter, Mikaela, whose life ended far too soon, had gotten her wings. But it also signaled the genesis of an idea Jorge had that would turn anguish into action, and tragedy into tribute.

Walk-a-thon Raises Funds for Pediatric Sickle Cell Program

In hopes of making a difference for children suffering from sickle cell anemia, Shanette Daniels, a family advocate for the Early Learning Coalition of Miami-Dade/Monroe, created an event she hopes will become an annual tradition. Daniels and her sister, Toni Knight, came up with the idea for a walk-a-thon early in 2017.

Dr. Graham Roger Serjeant, a world-renowned researcher and authority on sickle cell disease management and care, will visit the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine on Friday, Oct. 20, to tour the Pediatric Sickle Cell Unit at UM/Jackson Memorial Hospital and make a presentation about best practices for medical professionals caring for patients with sickle cell anemia.
