Emergency Medicine

While no parent wants to think about their child needing emergency care, it’s impossible to deny that accidents and illness do happen. Parents in Miami-Dade County can rest assured knowing that they have 24/7 access to Holtz Children’s Hospital Emergency Services, located on the UM/Jackson Memorial Medical Center in downtown Miami.

Unlike some hospitals that treat children and adults in the same Emergency Room, Holtz has a separate ER for children ranging in ages from newborn to 18 years old. It is staffed with specially trained medical professionals skilled in treating pediatric patients. Upon arrival, children are seen in the order of the acuity of their illness or injury and order of their arrival. If a child needs additional treatment, they can be admitted to Holtz Children’s Hospital immediately.

Holtz also has a pediatric transport team for children through the Aeromedical Transport Service, which provides regional air ambulance transport from other hospitals and Emergency Medical Service organizations within a 200-mile radius of Miami, including the Bahamas. This allows children who are traveling in the Caribbean or are not near downtown Miami, access to Holtz. The helicopters are equipped with a state-of-the-art critical care unit with crew and equipment capable of providing continuity of care en route for critically ill children.
