The Debbie School : Research & Special Projects

Listen & Talk

The University of Miami Debbie Institute received a Grant Award from the Health Foundation of South Florida for acoustic renovations in classrooms and therapy rooms designated for the Auditory/Oral Education Program, which serves children who are deaf and hard of hearing. The goal of the Listen & Talk Project is to improve classroom listening conditions in order to create the best possible learning environment for the children. In this program specialized auditory training goals and objectives are incorporated into the classroom curriculum to help the children use their sensory aids (hearing aids and cochlear implants) to augment their residual hearing in order to develop oral speech and language skills. An optimal listening environment will enable our students who are deaf and hard of hearing to improve their speech and language skills so that they can communicate with their family and friends and achieve success in school and the wider world.
