Gulliver Schools’ Charitable Arts Club Paints Mural at UM Children’s Heart Center

Miami – As part of Gulliver Schools’ Charitable Arts Club service to the community, Prep students recently painted a colorful mural leading the way to the Children’s Heart Center (CHC) at the Holtz Children’s Hospital at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center. These dedicated high school volunteers worked six Saturdays in a row, in order to complete their project. “Our students deserve tremendous credit for their service to our community,” said Miguel De Castillo, International Bachelorette (IB) history teacher at Gulliver Preparatory School and Charitable Arts Club sponsor.

Charitable Arts, a non-profit 501© (3) organization, was founded in January 2009 by Aylah Donayre. Her goal for this club is “not only to teach children some basic art techniques, but more importantly, empower them and make them feel they are taking part in improving their lives by helping the organizations that support them,” said president Donayre. Vice President, Inigo Hernandez-Ysasi continued, “This project was a great way for Gulliver students to make a difference in the lives of children who face serious health issues.”

Chief of Pediatric Cardiology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, William Harmon, M.D. stated, “I can’t begin to express how grateful we are every single day as we walk into the hospital mesmerized by the wonderful undersea scene! Our practice at Holtz Children’s Hospital is proudly satisfying, but we do face some environmental changes. I now see surprise and joy on the faces of the staff, families, and most importantly, our young patients as they wander the halls coming to and from the Holtz cardiology practice. It has created a much friendlier environment, making our children more comfortable during a potentially stressful time.”

Charitable Arts has raised more than $25,000 since inception in 2009. It distributes the funds to small organizations that help children in need and is now a non-profit organization with an adult Board of Directors. For more information, please visit www.charitablearts.org.
